The Four Essential Leadership Skills Manufacturers Need to Master

Over the past decade the Manufacturers’ Alliance team have witnessed four recurring skills gaps that are essential to leading a high performing team. They are so common; you will not be surprised by the list. What is surprising is the time it takes to identify and address the leadership development needs.

99% of manufacturing businesses in the UK are SME’s, so understandably many don’t have the necessary learning and development resources in place to assess their leadership development needs. Yet, as we all know, in the fast-paced and ever-evolving world of manufacturing, effective leadership is crucial for driving high levels of employee engagement and innovation, which are critical to delivering great results.

To help manufacturers overcome this challenge, the Manufacturers’ Alliance have highlighted the things you may be struggling with, and how this will manifest itself within your team and wider business culture.

1) Handling Conflict

Typical Struggles: You find it challenging to address conflict head-on, often avoiding difficult conversations or failing to mediate disputes effectively. This can stem from a lack of confidence in conflict resolution skills or a fear of damaging relationships, also known as people pleasing.

Manifestation: When conflicts are not handled properly, it can lead to a toxic work environment, decreased morale, and reduced productivity. Team members may feel undervalued or unheard, leading to increased turnover and a lack of cohesion within the team.

3 Key Strategies for Handling Conflict:

  • Empathic Listening: Pay attention to the concerns of your team and acknowledge their feelings and perspectives. Help them feel heard and understood.
  • Problem-Solving: Focus on working together as a team to find mutually beneficial solutions rather than assigning blame. Work with the facts and don’t make problems personal.
  • Assertiveness: Set yourself up for success and communicate your expectations clearly and confidently, while remaining respectful and open to feedback. Many conflicts can be avoided with clarity of communication.

2) Communication

Typical Struggles: You often struggle with clear and effective communication, either by providing too much technical detail or not enough context. You may also find it difficult to adapt your communication style to different audiences, or struggle to speak up.

Manifestation: Poor communication can result in misunderstandings, errors, and inefficiencies. Team members may feel disconnected from the company’s vision and goals, leading to a lack of alignment and motivation. This can ultimately impact the overall performance and success of the business.

3 Key Strategies for Effective Communication:

  • Clarity: Ensure that your messages are clear, concise, and free of jargon that may confuse team members. Tailor your communication style to suit different audiences and situations.
  • Listen: Great communication starts with listening. Encourage open and honest feedback from your team and be receptive to their input.
  • Confidence: Find your voice and your own authenticity in order to communicate in a way that resonates with your own values and beliefs.

3) Coaching

Typical Struggles: You are more accustomed to a directive style of management rather than a coaching approach. You may struggle with providing constructive feedback, asking the right questions, or empowering you team members to make their own decisions. You would much prefer to either do the job yourself or tell others what to do.

Manifestation: Without effective coaching, employees may feel micromanaged and undervalued, leading to decreased engagement and innovation. The lack of development opportunities can result in a stagnant workforce that is not equipped to handle new challenges or drive the business forward. You eventually become the bottleneck for all decision making and overworked.

3 Key Strategies for Effective Coaching:

  • Curiosity: Ask insightful questions that encourage team members to think critically and develop their problem-solving skills. The killer question in coaching is always, what do you think.
  • Resources: Make the time to understand and provide ongoing support and resources to help employees achieve their goals. What resources do they need? What training do they need?
  • Developmental Conversations: Engage in regular one-on-one meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and development opportunities. Providing a platform for effective delegation, allowing them to take ownership of their work and grow their skills.

4) Time Management

Typical Struggles: Time management is a common challenge for manufacturing leaders who often find themselves overwhelmed with day-to-day operations. You may struggle to prioritise tasks, plan strategically, or delegate effectively. You are regularly overwhelmed with too much to do.

Manifestation: Poor time management can lead to burnout, missed deadlines, and a lack of focus on strategic initiatives. Leaders may find themselves constantly firefighting rather than proactively driving the business forward. This can hinder the company’s ability to improve, innovate and stay competitive in the market.

3 Key Strategies for Effective Time Management:

  • Prioritisation: Identify and focus on the tasks that have the greatest impact on the business’s success. Many poor time managers are reactive and don’t work on priorities.
  • Effective Planning: Allocate time for planning ahead and protect your calendar to ensure that you have dedicated time for important activities, avoiding overcommitting.
  • Delegation: Trust your team members with responsibilities and avoid micromanaging. Allow a safe space for team members to try new things and fail. Getting things wrong is how we learn and grow.

By mastering these four essential leadership skills, manufacturers can enhance their ability to lead effectively, drive their teams towards success, and navigate the complexities of the modern manufacturing landscape. Continuous improvement in handling conflict, communication, coaching, and time management will not only benefit the leaders themselves but also contribute to the overall growth and success of their organisations.
