Gary and Trish Sheader have completed their challenge to walk over 1,200 miles throughout 2023 for Donna’s Dream House based in Blackpool. Their goal was to walk over 100 miles together every month throughout 2023, and have just completed this epic challenge.
The couple chose Donna’s Dream House after seeing what they do for terminally ill children on the Secret Millionaire TV programme back in 2009. When you have a terminally ill child, limited time and limited finances, Donna’s Dream House provides you with a free holiday and an all-round fun experience. Disney themed rooms, hot tub, 12-seater cinema room, sensory room, sweet shop, ice cream parlour, and an abundance of toys to play with. Plus, tickets to many Blackpool attractions.
Whilst the voluntary team of Donna’s Dream House provides the expertise, enthusiasm and administration, it is the generosity of many companies, organisations and individuals in raising and donating money, that makes it possible to bring not only sunshine and fun into children’s lives, but a sense of wonder, adventure, laughter and a much-needed holiday in Blackpool for the whole family.
Trish Sheader, shared her thoughts on completing the walking challenge, “I would definitely call it a challenge. It’s been hard work getting the miles in and having to prioritise these over other commitments, especially my beloved allotment which is looking rather neglected at the moment. I have found these last few months the hardest, with the nights drawing in and the usual busyness this time of years brings.”
“However much of a challenge the walking has been, the benefits and fulfilment I have had, have been limitless. Getting out in the fresh air almost every day has seen my sleep improve, heart rate reduce and general fitness increase. I have seen wonder in every single walk, watched the landscape change through the different seasons, learnt the names of most trees and discovered a new passion for foraging and identifying funghi!”
“Most importantly, knowing that we are doing this for such an inspiring charity has really kept us going. I watched a series on TV years ago that featured Donna’s Dream House and was so moved to hear Len and Babs story. Seeing their devotion and commitment to making Donna’s wish come true, is something I never forgot.”
