Bio: Not knowing what to do when leaving school 1976 at the age of 16 Peter started work on a building site and qualified as a carpenter and joiner. In 1979 he was offered a job in the family business and found his vocation in life.
He worked as a cable winder, several years in despatch and delivered the products to the customer as required. Over the years he became the company buyer, managed the supply chain, and had a spell as Operations Manager before becoming the MD in 1997.
He has an insatiable thirst to learn and improve so in the early days, implemented the ISO quality systems, cross site lean training and promoted a culture of “improvement is the norm”. Putting in processes and procedures helped to manage the business as it doubled the turnover in the first 10 years and became the market leader in automotive cable and electrical components. A key driver to the progress was the development of the people across the site.
A key part of the company’s success is down to an empowered management team that Peter has been developing over the years. By clearly defining the business objectives and setting the goals and targets has allowed the team to drive forward with great success. This has allowed Peter to spend less time on the detail and to think more strategically.
As a third generation family business Peter bought his brothers out in 2014 and is planning to spend more time on new challenges over the coming years. He still has a desire to drive the business forward in turnover and profit and giving his customers an unbeatable service.
The Manufacturers Alliance. Why? For twenty years I found it difficult to find an environment to share best practise or problem solve with business leaders in a trusting and safe space.
When I heard about the Manufacturers Alliance it ticked all the boxes. I’ve learnt so much over the years from talking to other business people. I’ve pinched best practise, developed and adapted it to suit my business with some great results. I would like to share my experience and successes to help others with a common passion for manufacturing and hopefully pass on a few of those ideas that have worked well for me in practise.
Peter’s also a Director of the Northern Automotive Alliance.
