- Give – Be generous with your advice and time - do not go to an event just to take and move on – When you leave the event you want to leave people with a positive image of you.
- Keep your contacts data base up to date with notes on when and where you met.
- Be patient, networking takes time, treat it as an investment that may not pay dividends for months.
- Attend events that are relevant to you and your career – do not become a networking addict. Your time is precious, use it wisely.
6. A referral is like a bottle of milk – do nothing with it for 3 days of more and it will go off!
7. Treat networking as a low risk conversation, be passionate about what you do but do not be over bearing – Have some prepared conversation topics in mind before your attend the event.
8. Do not blanket e-mail people – it just creates a bad impression and generally annoys those to whom you have sent the e mail to.
9. Set yourself simple but achievable targets when you attend events e.g... I would like to have the opportunity of having a second meet up with two persons – remember it is quality not quantity of the leads you make.
10. Try your best to remember names by what-ever method suits you best – there is nothing better than greeting someone by their name.
