The breakfast event theme was ‘making connections that matter’ and had been put together to provide an insight into the types of external connections local manufacturers are making to help to grow and improve their businesses.
Two real examples of making connections that matter were provided by Manufacturers Alliance members Jamie Dummer, Managing Director at Pneumatrol and Shaun Sutton, Managing Director at Central Group. Both Jamie and Shaun were very complimentary of their membership with the Alliance and the value they get from sharing ideas with their peers each month.
Shaun Sutton, Managing Director of Knowsley based Central Group, shared the technology challenges the manufacturing sector faces over the next decade and how Industry 4.0 will not only transform the industry but completely change the way Central Group will do business. Shaun’s message to the group was, “Being market leader in our industry is fantastic but the customer can and will continue to demand more, which puts more pressure on me as a leader and our business. Our membership with the Manufacturers Alliance has really helped us to turn a corner with some of the challenges we face as a business and I know we would not be where we are now without the support of the Chairmen and the members.”
Jamie Dummer, Managing Director of Accrington based Pneumatrol, shared a number of insights with the manufacturers in attendance on the value of an external network. His comments were, “Network to find people who have got relevant prior experience and who are prepared to share it with you. My membership with the Manufacturers Alliance has provided me with a safe environment, where I can be completely honest and have the discipline to take at least one day per month focused ‘on’ the business.”
The manufacturers in attendance felt the presentations from Jamie and Shaun were enjoyable, informative and full of practical examples. Quite a number of the businesses that attended were so impressed that they expressed an interest to join the Manufacturers Alliance as soon as the session ended.
Charles Garfit, Head of Manufacturing for Santander Corporate & Commercial Banking, summarised the event as follows, “this really was one of the most interesting sessions I have attended. It was really brought to life by some great examples of the growth ambition of UK manufacturers from Jamie and Shaun. I admire what the Manufacturers Alliance is aiming to achieve in the sector, and the team at Santander will do all we can to support them.”
